The experience was both eye opening and affirming....

“And thank you again for the wonderful few hours at the Marsh this past Monday. The experience was both eye opening and affirming, and I am excited to carry the things you shared with me into my work. Witnessing is such an essential part of authentic movement work, and I feel truly fortunate that you took on that role for me so that I could sink fully into the moment and into my own being. I left feeling extremely restored and at home in my own body and mind. I sincerely and eagerly look forward to future encounters with you (where we can venture deeper into the world of gesture and motivation!) and hope that that time comes sooner rather than later! ” ~Hilary Schroeder

Susan is skillful in the art of communicating and demonstrating the methods of which she teaches.

Susan Murphy has been an inspiration to me as a student, teacher, employee and friend. She has taught me much about expressive, creative dancing in the air whether I am sharing with her techniques of circus trapeze or she sharing with me the powerful tool that is Laban. As an award winning circus aerialist, I have found her expressive methodology and use of Laban to be an invaluable tool in my path to be a more creative artist.

Susan is skillful in the art of communicating and demonstrating the methods of which she teaches. The is an inspiring woman and her workshop is a must for anyone who wishes to move, dance or fly with creativity, intention and true emotion!

She creates an opportunity for people to make connections with their bodies.

“I have known Susan for eight years as a teacher, friend and Founding Director of Canopy Studio (2002-2009). Susan was the first adult who talked to me like I mattered. She creates an opportunity for people to make connections with their bodies. She can look at each dancer and realize what would feed them the most. Once you realize dance can be a really sacred, spiritual thing you never want to have it be any less than that.”

Working with you reminds me of the aspects of the work that I love and crave..

Working with you reminds me of the aspects of the work that I love and crave, and leaves me feeling renewed hope not only about what I can accomplish, but what I am at this moment. It reminds me of what I can do, when so much time and effort feels devoted to what I can’t.

I just love everything about the material you present and your approach to presenting it. It’s inspiring to me not only as a performer, but as a teacher. You are a gentle, yet powerful force.

I cannot say THANK YOU enough for sharing your knowledge and expertise with me today...

I am still trying to absorb all I learned today and am sitting here refining my notes while it’s all still fresh. I cannot say THANK YOU enough for sharing your knowledge and expertise with me today. I am so excited to begin applying the material to my aerial (and even clinical) work in the days ahead. You have a great teaching spirit and I am so happy to have had the opportunity to work with you.

Susan is an amazing teacher who introduced me to Laban Movement Analysis...

“Susan is an amazing teacher who introduced me to Laban Movement Analysis as a way of bringing more clarity of expression to my pieces and helping me tell the stories I wanted to tell with my movement. It was so liberating to finally have words to describe different qualities, and it has changed my work for the better to have that awareness.”

As a choreographer and consultant it is clear that she has a gift.

“Susan Murphy first introduced me to the trapeze several years ago and, along with it, a new avenue for expression. Now, as a professional performer and teacher, I continue to employ the methods and insights she instilled, both when teaching and when traveling my own creative path. As a choreographer and consultant it is clear that she has a gift. She shares her vast experiences and brings the creative touches that transform a piece from something purely technical, to a prospective journey shared with the audience and layered with intention.”

She has become a dance pioneer in her own right....

Susan Murphy and I met in 1976 when she enrolled in my class. At the time, I was in the process of developing my aerial dance form, Motivity. Susan was a curious, focused student, and a promising performing artist. I was drawn to her warm-hearted manner. We discovered that we shared a great appreciation for the art of teaching holistically. I felt she understood how I was using motional improvisation with trapezes to discover new, organic movement while also encouraging students to find their own particular style in a safe environment.

I saw that Susan was at ease performing and invited her to join a dance series I was creating, using different sizes trapezes. She was lovely to work with and watch.

I am honored to call Susan a close friend and colleague. She has become a dance pioneer in her own right, contributing greatly to her community and the aerial dance world as an fine artist and educator.

I learned lessons I never forgot........

When Susan arrived at the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies, to become a Certified Movement Analyst it was a challenge! You can imagine. Here was someone who danced in nature, not in the canyons of grided Manhattan. Who got deep inspiration from art, knowing some of the foremost expressionist painters of the times, and used poetry deeply and meaningfully. She allowed no superficial understanding.

Now, picture her learning a whole new vocabulary, a language about movement, with symbols and all, translating image and feelings into complex categories, and doing it all swinging and hanging from a trapeze. The material had to match the depth of her creativity. It worked.

Our stories have only begun to be told.but Susan has empowered us to tell those stories well.

If dancing is about telling a story, then Laban is about teaching you how to tell that story well.and Susan Murphy? She is the ultimate professor in teaching how to become a better storyteller.

Our encounter with Susan began as such: nine eager silk students, four trapezes, a willingness to learn, many stories yet to be told.

Throughout the evening, we explored the essence of intention in motivating movement, carrying a message through that movement, and communicating the spirit to a wider audience with movement. This workshop expanded our ability to choreograph with a wider purpose in mind, both as individuals to nurture our own creativity and as performers to morph our intentions into purposeful expressive shared journeys.

Our stories have only begun to be told.but Susan has empowered us to tell those stories well.
